The woman trapped in the elevator is Mrs. Hilyard, a wealthy poetess residing in a grand three-story city mansion. Her cage becomes her prison when the elevator malfunctions, stopping a dozen feet away from the main floor during a busy July 4th weekend. Desperate to escape, she repeatedly rings the outside alarm, hoping for someone to hear her cries for help. Finally, a drunken derelict stumbles upon the mansion, breaking in without a care for Mrs. Hilyards predicament. Instead of assisting her, the intruder proceeds to rummage through her possessions, swiping various items and indulging in her collection of alcohol.
