One evening, Hoffmann goes to the youth center where his estranged wife works in search of her. To his surprise, the police are inside rounding up radicals who often hang out at the center. In a state of panic, Hoffmann rushes into the building but ends up getting shot in the head. Miraculously, he survives but is left with severe brain trauma, suffering from partial paralysis and losing his ability to speak.
